The New Moon in Aries of the 5th of April 2019 is bringing a strong deal of pure raw energy into our lives. But it is a challenge, and the challenge is on how to use this energy. Confusion is on the spot, excitability mixed with vulnerability can hinder our power of decision-making, and the growing pressure from the demands of our direct environment (society, family, work, finances) is making the proper apprehension of this energy a challenging task!
The Moon is conjunct the Sun in the fire sign of Aries. Spring has arrived, the flowers are blooming, there is a strange sensation of optimism in the air, and all of a sudden we feel we have more energy and motivation to continue. But this flow is not easy, and there are obstacles on the way.
In terms of astrological symbolism, the young Moon-Sun are in a difficult square with the big lords Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn, the sign of “the real world”. And in fact, Saturn and Pluto are overcoming the Moon-Sun, which somehow means they “have the advantageous position”.
Then we have Jupiter in Sagittarius, the lord of expansion and discovery in his sign (but soon to turn retrograde, on the 10th of April) on a superior square to Mercury in Pisces, the messenger and genius trickster in the sign of the dreams.
In astrology, when two (or more) planets form an angle of 90° with each other, it is said they have made a “square aspect”. And the symbolism of a 90° angle tells us that these planets are experiencing “friction” or difficulty in bringing up their positive actions and qualities.
The situation is that we are dealing with conflicting forces here. On one side, there is this pure desire to create and act upon our lives, make decisions fast, take actions, jump into the unknown (with total optimism and passion!) and to simply make use of this huge creative potential that is pumping up with the rise of the spring, the return of life, the triumph of the sun above the darkness and the presence of a very fertile ground to bring things into realization or manifestation.
But on the other side, together with excitability goes blindness. When the canvas is empty, and the possibilities are endless, there can be confusion. And when the vision is so highly held, then at the same time, and deeply underneath our being, there is the desire to let it go (as crazy as it sounds).
And if there were no challenges, no obstacles, no difficulties or situations to overcome, what would be the thrill of living? Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn remind us this. The world is a difficult place, and in order to achieve, we must work it out (very hard). This typically involves sacrifices.
In order to really know about something, we must experience and discover it. The vision is very important, the pure energy and genuine wish also, but without structure nothing will hold. What’s the structure of our creative vision? Where is the plan? How are we going to achieve it? Do we know that it takes time, effort and sacrifice?
Life, financial matters, society and its bureaucratic processes, our families, hopes and wishes that have failed out of nowhere, and the very structure of reality present us with challenges to overcome. Situations in which we want to let go, enjoy, and just do what we want are constantly testing us. How strong is our will, how strong is our desire, how strong is our vision, how long are able to continue without crumbling down.
The interesting part is that within all this crazy dance of desires and limitations, we really end up missing the point. There are things we need to learn, to discover and to process from every single “obstacle” or “limitation” presented to us. Difficulties with our family members? Demotivation at work? Career issues? Lack of financial resources? The values dictated by the status quo? Relationships issues? The need to be free vs the apparent impossibility to feel that way?
All of these situations hold something that we need to discover, study, learn and process. Once we understand, we will have learned. And once we learn, we will have overcome it.
So these are part of the situations we might be experiencing with this New Moon. Remember that New Moons are periods of change, transition, shedding and renewal. It might be interesting to do an analysis of what are the things within ourselves which are affecting our lives.
What behaviours, attitudes or tendencies are no longer useful? Which hopes and visions are fantasies? Which have a potential successful outcome? How well grounded are we in reality? But how can we discern what is real and what is not? How can we determine if a social belief is real, or if it is a useless construct? To what extent is it okay to fight society, and to what extent do we need to flow peacefully with it?
Think about what you want to manifest or achieve in the next cycle. Do not jump into it blindly. With calm and ease, think about what are the steps to achieve this, and the potential challenges ahead. If the “response” feels good, then start little by little to engage in the execution plan. And commit yourself to enjoy every single bit of it.
Believe it or not, the ground is fertile for transformation, creation and manifestation. Fighting the current is not the way, but knowing all about it. When we encipher the structures of our reality, we can work its parts, and we can achieve our goals or transform them into new viable ones.
Key situations: too much energy, strong desires, passionate visions for the future, optimism, sexual desire, need to bring things into real manifestation, impatience, aversion to plan, aversion to society and its dictates, fighting processes, potential difficulties with colleagues/boss, anger towards oneself or others, confusion about what to do next, unrealistic dreams, realistic dreams, surge of new interests, defensive reactions, need to have fun (and why not to do so), helpfulness, urge to experience new things.
Symbolic Ritual Work for this Lunation
Choose a symbolic object for offering (this can be a fresh flower, a coin, a piece of fruit or vegetable, some drops of essential oil in a cotton ball, a small stone, or anything of a natural material that your creativity suggests). You will be offering this object the night of the New Moon. So keep in mind that you will lose this object (do not choose valuable objects!).
Prepare yourself the nights before the New Moon, during the Balsamic Moon phase by reflecting upon your current situation, and where do you want to take your life to. Think of anything within you that is blocking your flow. Any attitude, behaviour, thought pattern, resentment, trauma, or “unforgivable” experience. From these reflections, choose one thing that you need to release. But choose wisely and keep it in your head for the ritual you will do on the New Moon.
The night of the New Moon, when the sky is dark, you will sit in a quite comfortable place with view to the sky (indoors with a window or outdoors). Bring your offering object and a small bowl with salted water.
Sit comfortably, put the ritual items in front of you, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Quiet, easy, relax. You do not need to do any breathing technique. Just focus on your breathing. Stay there for a minute or two until you are feeling relaxed.
After this, open your eyes and look to the sky. Appreciate your surrounding and feel the connection between the silence, you, and the New Moon.
Take the object with your right hand, close your eyes, and visualise how that which you need to release from, “impersonates” the object. Take your time to do this.
When you are ready, open your eyes, focus your vision in one point (a star, a point in a cloud, the rain falling, or lights from the city). Look for a while, while feeling your presence in your body, in this environment, surrounded by the vast sky.
Then take the object with your two hands, extend them in front of you and say out loud:
“On this New Moon day, I choose to release from … <<whatever you chose>>”
“I offer this item as a symbol of my release and purification”
Then place the item inside the bowl with salty water for cleansing. Stay there for a couple of minutes feeling the release. Focus on this liberating feeling. You can have your eyes closed, or simply look at the sky.
When you are ready, take the item out of the water and say out loud:
“I give this cleansed offering back to Earth, for this is where it belongs. And I am ready to continue on my path, now released from obsolete inner blockages. I put on this offering my hopes and wishes for the upcoming days, and my unconditional acceptance of whatever the Universe plans for me, knowing always that the Universe knows its ways.”
Now you are ready to place this item back on the ground and allow things to happen as they must.
Elaborated Extended Version for the Ritual
Once you are finished with the ritual, engage yourself in a purifying aromatic bath or facial steam in order to prepare yourself for the upcoming days, with blessings from Earth and with a totally revitalised energy.
For a Bath
Mix in a glass bowl:
1 tbsp Epsom Salt
2 tbsp Regular Salt (Himalayan, Celtic, Dead Sea, or unrefined salt)
In another glass bowl, mix together:
1 tbsp Castile Soap (or mild liquid soap)
3 drops of Juniper (Juniperus communis). If pregnant, replace with Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
2 drops of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens var roseum)
1 drop of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Then add the wet mix to the salts mix. Incorporate it well with a non-metallic spoon.
Add this final mixture to a warm bath, and enjoy while visualizing your acceptance towards what life will unfold.
For a Facial Steam
Mix the following dried herbs in a pot with a lid:
3 parts of Chamomile (Matricaria Recutita)
2 parts of Rose (Rosa Centrifolia)
2 parts of Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia)
Optional: 1 part of Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris). OMIT this ingredient if pregnant.
Close the pot, and keep it for future use. It would be good to put a label with the ingredients.
To a wide glass bowl, add boiling water. Add 1 tbsp of the herbs mixture, and cover it with a lid for 10 minutes. Open the lid and let it cool down a bit (so that you do not burn).
Holding your head 20-30 cm from bowl, drape a large towel over head and bowl to capture steaming herbal water. If it is too hot, wait a little bit more until the effect is pleasant. If at any time it gets too hot under the towel, lift a corner to let in some cool air.
Allow the steam to bathe your skin a minute or two and then raise your head out to take a few breaths of fresh air.
Repeat the process as needed, while becoming aware of your being, your spirit, the liberated feeling from the blockage you have removed, and your open and optimistic attitude towards the unknown future.
Once you are finished, splash face with cool water, to close your pores, and pat dry. This facial steam will also be very good to your skin.
